Alfred "Alfie" Swain Jr. Obituary

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Alfred “Alfie” John Swain Jr. on January 29, 2026, at his home in Goulds.

Alfie is predeceased by his father, Alfred John Swain.

He leaves to mourn his loving wife, Michelle, of 23 years, who stood by his side until the end; his son Rylan; his daughter Kara; his loving mother, Elizabeth (Betty) Swain; brothers Francis Swain (Shelley) and Brian Swain (Jennifer); sisters Sharon Dutton (Tim), Laura Swain, and Michelle Swain; his parents-in-law, Michael and Anne Samson; sister-in-law Melanie Kennedy (Michael), who lived with Alfie and Michelle for several years and whom he always referred to as his very first child; brothers-in-law Dale Samson (Dale) and Justin Samson (Allison); as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends, especially his lifelong best friends Randy Kavanagh and Ross Sullivan, and his good friend Clarence Molloy.

Although Alfie left us far too soon, with so much life yet to live, he embraced life to the fullest and built a life that many could only hope for. He grew up in a close-knit family and was always surrounded by friends. He was the kind of person who would do anything for anyone, and this kindness was reflected in the deep friendships and lasting connections he made throughout his life. Alfie was a hard worker—from his early days in Admiral’s Cove and Calvert (which he referred to as God’s country) to his time on the oil rigs in Alberta and working offshore in both Newfoundland and overseas. No matter where he was, he gave his all and took pride in what he did.

Alfie was blessed with a beautiful marriage of 23 years, and together he and Michelle built a life rooted in love, laughter, and constant support. Their two children, Rylan and Kara, were his greatest pride and joy. He was their biggest supporter, their protector, and their steady source of encouragement. His love for his family gave him the courage and determination to face each day with strength, even on the hardest days. We find comfort in knowing that Alfie left this world knowing how deeply he was loved, and that his family will carry on strong because of the love, guidance, and support he gave them.

His presence will always be felt in the lives he touched, and he leaves us with beautiful memories that we will cherish forever. Alfie will be remembered not only for his unwavering dedication and strength, but also for his zest for life, his quick wit, and the laughter he shared with everyone around him. We cannot forget his love of sports, especially hockey, and his team, the Edmonton Oilers (GO OILERS!!).

Deepest gratitude is extended to his incredible team throughout his cancer journey, especially Dr. Joanne Hickey and Charlene Downey (NP), who provided impeccable care and countless support over the years; the doctors and nurses of 4NA; and the entire staff at the Cancer Clinic for their compassion, care, and humor that brightened Alfie’s visits.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at Ryan’s Funeral Home in Bay Bulls on Saturday, February 7th, and Sunday, February 8th, from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 9, 2026, at Immaculate Conception Church, Northside Road, Calvert with inurnment to follow at Holy Trinity Cemetery, Ferryland.
